HURLEY, VA – March 13, 2023 – Jonathan and Ashley Hurley have long enjoyed home renovation work and ultimately, the couple decided to turn it into a business, opening Hurley Remodeling & Custom Designs LLC in Hurley, Va.

Hurley Remodeling & Custom Designs LLC was a recent recipient of a $10,000 Virginia Coalfield Economic Development Authority (VCEDA) Seed Capital Matching Grant.

“Hurley Remodeling & Custom Designs LLC offers much needed services in the region for homeowners looking for help in renovation, remodeling or construction work,” said Jonathan Belcher, VCEDA executive director/general counsel. “The business projects two full-time and four part-time employees within five years.”

Small jobs and larger ones have found the remodeling help they need through the business which does all types of reno work, from flooring and tilework to bathroom and kitchen remodels and everything in between. As the business grows, the Hurleys hope to be able to add a second crew to lessen wait times and expand their opportunities for work.

“Our mission is to provide the highest quality remodeling, renovation and contracting services from the smallest of jobs to the largest of jobs with a personal, friendly, hometown, neighborly approach,” said Ashley Hurley.

The new business is located on 1839 Mountain Laurel Road in Hurley and offers services in the Southwest Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Southern West Virginia regions. In addition to remodeling options, the Hurleys also offer residential repair options and services including plumbing, tiling, flooring, painting, drywall, trim masonry, general carpentry and construction.

Ashley Hurley noted the business was born out of their enjoyment of remodeling and after her husband was laid off from his place of employment.

“We just decided to go in a new direction,” she said. “The VCEDA grant has been wonderful. We had been struggling, but this will allow us to continue to grow and get some others in here to help us which will lessen wait times for our services.”

The Hurleys worked with the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Southwest Virginia Community College (SWCC) in developing their application to VCEDA and received a letter of support from the Buchanan County Industrial Development Authority.

“I’m ecstatic to see Hurley Remodeling be one of the recipients of VCEDA’s Seed Capital grant,” said Matt Fields, Buchanan County IDA executive director. “The Seed Capital Program has been instrumental in helping small up and coming businesses get off the ground and inject themselves into the local economy. Buchanan County is very thankful for VCEDA’s efforts in stimulating economic growth in the region and this is a service that will benefit many.”

“Hurley Remodeling provides quality workmanship to Southwest Virginia and the SBDC at Southwest Virginia Community College was happy to provide the technical support for their application for the VCEDA Seed Capital Matching Fund grant,” said Margie Douglass, SBDC program manager at SWCC.  “As recipients of this grant, Hurley Remodeling will be able to grow their service area and offer their valuable expertise to more customers.”
